What is meant by 'insurance write off' ?
Insurance companies often call caravans involved in an accident a 'write off', which gives the wrong impression to anyone not familiar with the insurance or salvage industry. An insurance company faced with a claim first estimate the financial cost of repairing the caravan to its pre accident condition.
The cost of the repair will be based on new parts and dealer labour charges, often making it uneconomical for the insurance company to carry out the repair. A person doing the work themselves and using secondhand parts makes the repair much cheaper.
If the insurance company decide not to repair the caravan due to financial costs then they would call the caravan a 'write off' which means that they will 'write off' the financial cost of the repair.
Don't forget the biggest advantage to buying a damaged repairable caravan is the cost saving when compared to dealer prices
The insurance company has decided to write it off rather than repair the caravan. This can happen for a number of reasons i.e.
a) purely costs
b) high recovery costs especially from abroad
c) caravan was insured new for old
To put a cat C 'write off' caravan back on the road:-
a) repair it
b) get an insurance assessor to inspect and write a report
c) send report to CRIS plus £10, they will then send you a logbook
What is meant by 'stolen recovered' ?
The caravan was stolen and subsequently recovered by the police. The insurance company then sell off the caravan to recover some of their costs.
To get a logbook all you have to do is write to CRIS plus £10 they will send you a logbook. Sometimes CRIS want an engineers report
All our caravans including the ones we sell for breaking are checked over to make sure they are OK to tow.
Our descriptions are only of what is fitted to the caravan - this does not mean that the item is working or safe to use
